First Sentences - Harper Lee

Francine Prose missed one.  In my opinion, as you remember if you survived freshman English, this is one of the best opening lines.  It's from To Kill a Mockingbird.


"When he was nearly thirteen, my brother Jem got his arm badly broken at the elbow."
